Adult No-Gi BJJ 101
(Intro to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)

This class is designed for adults who are new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts. Conveniently serving Decatur and nearby neighborhoods like Avondale Estates, Oakhurst, Kirkwood, East Lake area, the Adult No-Gi 101 is your welcoming starting point and a perfect first step for the BJJ curious. This class is built for beginners, with simple instruction, a supportive environment, and a step-by-step path to confidence on the mats.

What you’ll learn

  • Safe movement, functional fitness, and basic body mechanics (how to train without getting hurt)
  • Warm-ups and light conditioning that are meant to help get your body ready for BJJ
  • Key terms and vocabulary we use in BJJ
  • Core positions (guard, side control, mount, back control)
  • Escapes and “survival” skills for common bad situations
  • Simple takedown/clinch entries and how to safely start rounds
  • Intro-level submissions taught with control and safety
  • There is little to no sparring in this class, so the intensity is very low

What to wear

Shorts without pockets or buttons (e.g., boardshorts, running or grappling shorts) and a rashguard. New students may choose to wear a t-shirt and workout shorts or yoga pants on their first day.

Do I need to get in shape before I start classes?

Absolutely not. This is the most common myth we hear! Our Adult No-Gi 101 program is designed to get you in shape, not require it beforehand. We use warm-ups and light conditioning specific to BJJ to help you build functional fitness safely. Many of our students in Decatur start with zero athletic background and build their cardio on the mats.

Your safety is our top priority. In the 101/Intro class, there is little to no live sparring, so the intensity remains low. We focus entirely on safe movement, body mechanics, and controlled introduction to submissions. You will not be thrown into the deep end; our goal is to give you a step-by-step path to confidence and success.
