Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class
(Ages 4–6)

Looking for kids’ BJJ classes in Decatur for a younger child? Our Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program for ages 4-6 is built for preschool and kindergarten students who need structure, movement, and confidence, all without the intensity or pressure.

We focus on balance, listening skills, teamwork, a good attitude, and good mat habits in a fun, safe environment. At SuperFly BJJ, this is a beginner-friendly starting point for younger kids, especially for families exploring martial arts for the first time and wanting a safe, structured introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

What Kids Learn (Ages 4–6)

At this age, the goal isn’t “fighting.” It’s building a strong base of balance and confidence through simple, repeatable movements and partner games.

We focus on:

  • Balance and body control
  • Safe falling, rolling, and basic movement
  • Following directions, taking turns, and staying focused
  • Partner drills that teach safe control and teamwork
  • Confidence through small wins and consistent routines

What Makes the Kids BJJ Ages 4–6 Class Different Than Our Kids BJJ Ages 7+ Class

Your preschooler or kindergartner needs a different approach than a student who is 7+ years old.

The Kids BJJ Ages 4–6 class is built around:

  • Basic movement and balance
  • Short lessons with quick resets
  • Games and partner drills for learning by doing
  • Emphasis on routines and positive mat habits

The older kids’ class becomes more technique-focused and introduces submissions. (If your child is age 7 or older, start here).

Class Format & Safety

The coaches for our kids’ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes keep class safe, structured, and supportive.

Safety Standards We Follow:

  • Clear rules and close coach supervision at all times
  • Coaches monitor partners and intensity
  • Focus on control, not aggression
  • Kids are coached to respect partners and “pause” when needed
  • Age-appropriate partner drills (no ‘hard sparring’ for 4–6)
  • Parents are welcome to watch

Here’s what we hear most from parents before their first class.

My child has never done any sport or class. Is that okay?

That’s actually the ideal starting point. Our 4–6 class is built from the ground up for kids with zero experience. There’s no baseline required, just a willingness to show up and try.

What if my child gets upset or doesn’t want to participate?

It happens, and our coaches are used to it. We never force participation. Kids who need a minute on the sideline are welcome to watch until they’re ready. Most kids are on the mat within a few minutes once they see the other kids having fun.

My child has ADHD or has trouble sitting still. Will they keep up?

BJJ for this age group is movement-based, so there’s very little sitting and listening. The class structure is short bursts of activity with clear transitions, which tends to work well for kids who struggle in traditional classroom settings. Several of our current young students have ADHD or sensory sensitivities and do very well.

How long are classes, and how often should we come?

Classes are 50 minutes, the right length for this age group’s attention span. Once a week is a great starting point. Many families move to twice a week after the first month, once their child is settled in.

What does my child wear?

Athletic clothes: shorts and a t-shirt work fine. No uniform required to start. Just arrive 10 minutes early so we can get paperwork done before class.

Is there any contact or sparring?

Some. We introduce the children to movement games, balance, and partner drills at a completely controlled pace.  There are no submissions at this age, but we do introduce them to positional sparring.

What happens when my child turns 7?

They move into our Kids BJJ Ages 7+ class, which introduces more structure, technique, and submissions. Most kids make that transition naturally and are well prepared for it.

Do you offer a trial class?

Yes. All new students get a complimentary trial class. Use our sign-up button to schedule your trial class.

What if my child loves it and wants to compete?

We have a kids’ competition team for students. Competitions for kids start at age 5.
