Why This Beginner BJJ Class Matters

Starting BJJ can feel intimidating. This program is designed to make it accessible for complete beginners. You will learn the basics in a clear, repeatable way so you can build confidence before moving into faster-paced classes, like our Fundamentals Class.

If you have been searching for beginner BJJ classes or BJJ for beginners, this is the right place to start. Most beginners start here.

What to Expect in Class

Simple Class Structure:

Classes follow a consistent format:

  • Warm-up movements
Simple drills that help you get comfortable moving on the mat.
  • Technique instruction
Coaches demonstrate a fundamental Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique step-by-step.
  • Partner practice
Students practice the movement slowly with a partner while instructors provide feedback.

Most new students leave their first class realizing that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is far more welcoming and beginner-friendly than they expected.

Intensity and Safety:

This is a beginner class. The goal is learning, not “surviving.” We keep the pace controlled and focused on safe movement, good habits, and proper technique.

What to Wear for Your First Beginner BJJ Class

You do not need special gear to start. This Intro class is No Gi, which means you can start in athletic clothes and you do not need a Gi (the traditional uniform, also called a kimono) on day one.

Easy Options for Day One:

  • Ideally, shorts without pockets or buttons (board shorts, running shorts, or grappling shorts)
  • A rashguard is recommended
  • New students can wear a t-shirt and workout shorts or yoga pants for the first class

If you are unsure, show up in normal athletic clothes, and we will guide you.

FAQs

Do I need to get in shape before I start?

No. This is the most common myth we hear. Intro to BJJ/101 is designed to help you build fitness safely while you learn. Many students start with zero athletic background and improve on the mats over time. We encourage students to start BJJ to get in shape, not get in shape to start BJJ.

What should I bring to my first class?

We recommend you bring a water bottle, arrive early, and wear athletic clothing.

Is this class safe for beginners? Will I have to spar on day one?

Your safety is the priority. In Intro to BJJ/101 there is no live sparring, so the intensity stays very low. We focus on safe movement, controlled drilling, and a step-by-step introduction to positions.

I have zero martial arts experience. Is this class right for me?

Yes. This class is built for total beginners. We teach from the ground up, explain the vocabulary, and cover the core positions so you never feel lost.

What if I feel nervous walking in?

That is normal. Most beginners feel that way. Our coaches will guide you, and you will never be thrown into the deep end or pushed to do anything you are not comfortable with.
