What is Brazilian jiu jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, also known as BJJ, is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and grappling techniques. Developed in Brazil in the early 20th century, BJJ is based on the principles of leverage and technique, allowing smaller individuals to defend themselves against larger opponents.

In BJJ, practitioners use a variety of techniques such as joint locks, chokes, and holds to control and submit their opponent. The martial art emphasizes the use of proper technique and strategy, rather than brute strength or force, making it an effective form of self-defense for people of all ages and sizes.

BJJ training typically involves drilling and sparring (or “rolling”), as well as physical conditioning and flexibility exercises. Typical Class Structure

All of our classes are taught by experienced blackbelt instructors. You can expect a program that has been carefully developed to promote safety, cleanliness and most importantly, FUN. Learning a martial art doesn’t need to be intimidating or macho and we strive to share the love we have for BJJ with all who are interested in learning about it. Classes typically begin with a warm up followed by the introduction of a technique. Time is then spent working on the details of the technique before moving into live situational sparring with the technique. Class typically concludes with rounds of general live sparring.

The younger kids’ classes focus on coordination and introduction to the movements and fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. There is very little time spent on submissions at this age.
